Facebook: A Place to Broadcast Your Life?

After reading this week's assignments I started thinking -- do I know people who put too much information on their Facebook? Then it hit me -- of course I do! Nearly everyone of my Facebook "friends" puts so much information on their page, basically asking for someone to steal their identity or do some serious stalking. There is one girl in particular, I'll call her Mary, who I went to high school with who is a big fan of over sharing, whether it be changing her "relationship status" from single to it's complicated nearly every day, or putting her exact location on her status updates. Not only does she constantly update, but she loves to put new main pictures up with either one of two captions, "OMG I look gross, LOL" and "IDK if I really like this pic.." Who knows why she does this, maybe it's to get LIKES or constant notifications to her BlackBerry, but one thing is for sure -- she craves attention from her 2,000 or so "friends." Much like the girls we read about in class on Thursday, Mary defends her actions, and believes that there is nothing wrong with posting half naked pictures of herself, because after all, it is her life, and who is anyone to tell her what to do? My main concern about this is that when she is older and becomes more mature, she will realize that maybe it wasn't the greatest idea to be so forward on the Internet and put herself out there for literally everyone to see.
I came across this satirical article on The Onion and although it is just a joke, it really made a little nervous. Can anything ever truly be deleted from the Internet? I'm not saying that I have incriminating pictures of me on my Facebook, but there definitely are some pictures that are very unflattering that my friends have uploaded, and even though I "untag" them and they don't show up on my page, they are still in those albums. This makes me wonder: is it even worth it to have a Facebook page? There are many advantages to having one of course, but there are also just as many, if not more, downsides of having one. The question I want to end this post with is this: Is maintaining a Facebook page in order to feel like part of the in crowd worth risking your future self?

VMA -- Very Much Anticipated..

This past Sunday, MTV aired the 2010 Video Music Awards. Of course, I cleared my schedule and put off all my homework for Monday's classes. I was ready for an fun show, hopefully one that would top last year's antics. What could happen this time? Would Taylor Swift interrupt Kanye's performance? Would Justin Bieber fall going up the steps to get one of his awards? Nope. Nothing. Nothing exciting happened during this show at all. Needless to say, I was very disappointed I didn't wait until the reruns on MTV to watch it, and even more disappointed that I missed the season finale of both Entourage and True Blood for a mediocre show with a mediocre host. I do love Chelsea Handler - I mean, who doesn't? - but I feel that she fell short this time. Some of her jokes were funny, but most were not. One thing was for sure - she was not as outstanding as I or any of my friends hoped she would be. I think she should stick to hosting her show on E!.

One thing I an say about the show this year is that the world's most eccentric performer, Lady Gaga, did not disappoint. Of course, I think all of her outfits are completely absurd and entertaining, but I was actually feeling really bad for the people who were in a twenty foot radius of her -- not only were her headpieces probably obstructing their view, but that dress made out of MEAT? She must have smelled awesome.

Hopefully next year the VMAs will go back to being as entertaining as they once were..
